How to Use the Bas Relief Filter for Sculptural Photo Art

4 min read

Turn Family Photos into Carved Stone Art

Imagine your favourite portrait of Grandma looking like it was chiselled from marble, or that snapshot of your grandchildren transformed into a museum-worthy relief sculpture. The Bas Relief filter in Photoshop Elements does exactly this — it makes your photos look like they have been carved into stone, with raised and lowered surfaces catching dramatic light.

This artistic effect works beautifully for creating unique wall art, memorial tributes, or simply experimenting with a completely different look for treasured images. The filter simulates the ancient art form where figures project slightly from a flat background, and you control exactly how dramatic the result appears.

What Makes Bas Relief Special

Unlike other artistic filters that add colour or painterly strokes, the Bas Relief filter focuses entirely on texture and light direction. It converts your photo into what appears to be a carved surface, with highlights and shadows creating the illusion of depth. The result feels timeless and sophisticated — perfect for portraits, architectural shots, or any image with strong shapes.

Photoshop Elements gives you control over three key aspects: how detailed the carving appears, how smooth or rough the surface looks, and which direction the light seems to come from. These simple adjustments let you create everything from subtle embossed effects to bold sculptural statements.

Getting Your Photo Ready

Before applying this effect in PSE, choose an image with clear shapes and good contrast. Portraits with defined features work wonderfully, as do photos of buildings, flowers, or pets. Busy backgrounds can muddy the carved effect, so simpler compositions often produce the most striking results.

  1. 1Open your chosen photo in Photoshop Elements
  2. 2Switch to Advanced mode by clicking on it at the top of the workspace
  3. 3Go to Layer → Duplicate Layer and click OK to protect your original
  4. 4With the duplicate layer selected, continue to the filter

Applying the Bas Relief Filter

Now comes the creative part. The filter lives in the Sketch category because it reduces your image to basic tonal shapes, much like an artist would when sketching a subject.

  1. 1Navigate to Filter → Sketch → Bas Relief
  2. 2The filter dialog opens with a preview of your image
  3. 3Adjust the Detail slider first — higher values preserve more of your original image features, while lower values create a simpler, bolder carved look
  4. 4Move the Smoothness slider to control surface texture — lower values create rougher stone, higher values give polished marble
  5. 5Use the Light dropdown menu to choose where the virtual light source comes from — this dramatically changes which edges appear raised or recessed
  6. 6Watch the preview carefully as you experiment
  7. 7Click OK when satisfied with the sculptural effect

Understanding the Controls

The Detail setting typically works best between 10 and 15 for portraits, preserving recognisable features while still creating that carved appearance. For landscapes or architectural photos, you might push this lower for a more abstract sculptural feel.

Smoothness around 3 to 5 gives a classic carved stone texture. Going much higher makes the surface look almost plastic, while very low values can introduce unwanted graininess.

The Light direction is particularly important — try several options before deciding. Light from the top often feels most natural, but side lighting can create more dramatic depth. In Photoshop Elements, this single choice transforms how three-dimensional your carved effect appears.

Adding Finishing Touches

The basic filter creates a greyscale result using your current foreground and background colours. For classic carved stone, ensure these are set to black and white before applying the filter. However, you can experiment with other colours for creative effects — try cream and brown for an aged sandstone look.

After applying the filter, you might want to adjust the overall brightness:

  1. 1Go to Enhance → Adjust Lighting → Levels
  2. 2Move the middle grey slider slightly to brighten or darken the midtones
  3. 3Click OK to apply

For a warmer stone appearance, try Enhance → Adjust Color → Adjust Hue/Saturation, tick Colorize, then add a subtle warm tint.

Creative Ideas for Your Bas Relief Art

This PSE filter opens wonderful possibilities for meaningful projects. Create a series of grandchildren portraits as matching sculptural prints for your hallway. Transform a wedding photo into something that looks carved in marble for a special anniversary gift. Even pet portraits take on an amusing dignity when rendered as relief sculptures.

For memorial tributes, this effect adds a sense of permanence and classical beauty that feels respectful and lasting. A beloved family member portrayed in carved stone carries emotional weight that a regular photo sometimes cannot.
