How to Use the Lens Flare Filter for Sun-Kissed Photo Effects

4 min read

Why Add Lens Flare to Your Family Photos

You know that magical moment when sunlight catches the camera just right, creating a warm, dreamy glow across your photo? That golden-hour sparkle makes holiday snapshots, beach portraits, and garden photos feel extra special. But what if your camera did not capture that beautiful sun flare naturally?

That is where the Lens Flare filter in Photoshop Elements comes in. This simple tool lets you add realistic sunlight effects to any photo — turning an ordinary afternoon snapshot into something that looks like it was taken during the most beautiful hour of the day.

Whether you want to add warmth to a grandchild's birthday party photo or give those vacation beach shots a sun-drenched feel, this filter is surprisingly easy to use once you know the basics.

What the Lens Flare Filter Does

The Lens Flare filter simulates what happens when bright light — usually the sun — shines directly into a camera lens. It creates those beautiful circular highlights, rays, and warm colour shifts that photographers often try to capture naturally.

In Photoshop Elements, you can control exactly where the flare appears, how bright it is, and what style of lens effect you prefer. The result adds depth and atmosphere to photos that might otherwise feel flat.

How to Add Lens Flare in Photoshop Elements

Follow these steps to add a natural-looking sun flare to your photo. You will be working in Advanced mode for full control over the effect.

Step 1: Open Your Photo and Prepare a New Layer

  1. 1Open your photo in Photoshop Elements and switch to Advanced mode using the tabs at the top of the Editor.
  1. 1Go to Layer → New → Layer to create an empty layer above your photo.
  1. 1With this new layer selected, go to Edit → Fill Layer.
  1. 1Choose Black from the Contents dropdown and click OK.

Creating this separate black layer lets you apply the lens flare non-destructively — meaning you can adjust or remove it later without affecting your original photo.

Step 2: Apply the Lens Flare Filter

  1. 1Make sure your black layer is still selected in the Layers panel.
  1. 1Go to Filter → Render → Lens Flare.
  1. 1In the dialogue box that appears, you will see a preview of your effect.
  1. 1Click anywhere in the preview window to position the centre of your flare — place it where the sun would naturally appear in your scene, such as near the top corner or behind a subject's head.
  1. 1Adjust the Brightness slider to control how intense the flare appears. Start around 100% and adjust to taste.
  1. 1Choose a Lens Type from the options below the preview. Each simulates a different camera lens style:

- 50-300mm Zoom creates a classic, natural-looking flare

- 35mm Prime offers a softer, more subtle effect

- 105mm Prime produces distinct circular rings

- Movie Prime gives a cinematic, stylised look

  1. 1Click OK to apply the filter.

Step 3: Blend the Flare Into Your Photo

  1. 1With your flare layer selected, look at the Layers panel.
  1. 1Find the blend mode dropdown (it currently says Normal).
  1. 1Change it to Screen — this makes the black disappear while keeping only the bright flare effect visible.
  1. 1Lower the layer Opacity if the effect feels too strong. Try 70-80% for a natural look.

Tips for Realistic Results in PSE

The secret to a believable lens flare is placement and subtlety. Here are some tips:

  • Position matters — Place the flare centre where sunlight would logically come from. Behind trees, above a horizon line, or streaming through a window all work beautifully.
  • Match the lighting — If your photo was taken on a cloudy day, a strong lens flare may look odd. Save this effect for photos that already have some natural brightness.
  • Less is often more — A subtle flare adds warmth without screaming "I edited this photo!" Lower the opacity until it enhances rather than overwhelms.
  • Try different lens types — Each option in Photoshop Elements creates a distinct mood. The 50-300mm Zoom works well for outdoor family portraits, while Movie Prime suits creative projects.

When to Use This Effect

Lens flare works wonderfully for:

  • Beach and poolside holiday photos
  • Garden portraits with grandchildren
  • Wedding or anniversary celebration shots
  • Pet photos taken outdoors
  • Any image where you want to add warmth and a golden-hour feeling

Because you applied the effect on its own layer, you can easily delete it, reduce the opacity, or try a different flare style without starting over. This non-destructive approach in PSE gives you complete creative freedom.
